CCGSE Mentorship Award

The CCGSE Mentorship Award is sponsored annually in recognition of exceptional mentorship at the level of graduate instruction. The honour is twofold:(1) It recognizes the essential role of mentorship in Canadian educational research, and (2) it pays tribute to an individual CSSE faculty member who has provided outstanding support and encouragement for graduate students in education. The CCGSE Mentorship Award is presented annually at the General Meeting of CSSE, during the Congress of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Prize

Recognition at the CSSE Annual General Meeting and a one year paid membership to CSSE.

Criteria

Evidence in recognition of exceptional graduate student mentoring may include, but is not limited to: (1) encouraging contributions to the knowledge base of graduate students. This might be reflected in the number of graduate courses taught, graduate seminars presented, or graduate theses supervised. (2) providing opportunities for graduate students’ professional growth as teachers and researchers. Examples include helping students to present posters, papers, and seminars within their own faculties or at larger conferences, inviting students to collaborate on research projects or co-authored papers. (3) modeling active membership in professional societies and encouraging students to do the same. CSSE and its constituent research associations provide fertile ground in this area.

Submission Requirements

To nominate a candidate for the CCGSE Mentorship Award, please prepare the following:

1. A cover letter stating the full name, institutional affiliation, job title, and complete contact information (address, phone number and email address) for your nominee
2. A blind letter of nomination describing in detail why the nominee deserves to be recognized for mentoring graduate students. The easiest way is to refer to your candidate simply as “the nominee”. A blind letter also does not contain any references to institutional affiliation or other information that might give away the identity of the nominee. Please keep letters to a 2 page limit.
3. Three letters of support from other mentees (e.g. graduate students who the nominee has supervised, taught or worked with) and colleagues. Please keep letters to a 2 page limit.

All documents must be submitted a single file Word document. Please adhere to a standard font size and type. Letters may be submitted as single or double spaced. Only electronic nominations will be considered.
