Call For Proposals - Roundtable & Poster Session
Call For Proposals: CCSE Roundtable and Poster Sessions
Every year, CCSE holds both a Roundtable and a Poster Session for graduate students attending the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for Studies in Education (CSSE). These sessions provide an opportunity for graduate students in education to discuss their work with senior professors, get valuable feedback, and build a network outside their immediate program. This is also an ideal opportunity for students who have never presented a paper at an academic conference to do so in a collegial and supportive setting.
Poster fair. At the poster fair, you display a summary of your work on a large poster set up on a wall or an easel for perusal and informal chats with other conference goers who drop by. It is customary to provide either copies of your paper or a summary of your poster at your poster table. The poster fair is a nice way to allow those who are interested to come forward, read your summary, and ask you questions about your work. We match you up with a senior faculty member in your area to stay with you and provide advice.

Roundtable sessions. Roundtables are just that - a group of round tables in which you are the center and one to five conference members sit with you as you give a mini-presentation of your work and then invite them to join in for discussion. We will set you up with a Canadian senior faculty member whose work closely relates to your proposal - they will act as your discussant. You will be expected to forward an outline or a draft of your paper (max. 10 pages) to the discussant one month prior to the conference. This discussant reads your paper prior to your session and provides a number of thoughtful questions to put forward to both you and the others at your table. To make the most of this experience you will also be asked to indicate the nature of the feedback would like to receive from the discussant.
Presentations in both the roundtable and poster formats do not have to be traditional conference papers. They may include thesis proposals, course papers, drafts of articles, literature reviews, thesis chapters, curriculum units, etc. Take advantage of this opportunity to discuss your work and receive valuable feedback that will help shape your work. The idea is to receive insights, ideas, encouragement, and comments on your work to help you foster your development - as well as provide you with experience with presenting your ideas to someone outside of your immediate department in a collegial and supportive setting.
Because of the location this year, we expect a large number of applicants. As such, we can only accept proposals that include the following
1) a one page summary of your presentation
2) the completed cover sheet (below)
All proposals that that meet the criteria will be accepted*, and all presentations may be listed on your Curriculum Vitae.
Please note, we will NOT review proposals that
- are incomplete
- that are emailed or faxed
- that are not postmarked by Jan. 10th
NO EXCEPTIONS
*We cannot accept more than 50 proposals, however. In the event that we receive more than 50 proposals, we will begin a selection criteria that evaluates your proposal package.
Paper titles and session times will be listed in the CSSE conference guide and the sessions will be open to all CSSE conference participants. For more information about this student session, please contact Lauren McNamara at L_mcnamara@sfu.ca.
