From fundraising to international student recruitment, exclusive academic programs to corporate partnerships, the privatization of public education is ubiquitous across Canada. In this year’s Sherman Lecture, Dr. Sue Winton highlights policies that import values and practices from the for-profit sector into education systems and shift responsibilities for public education to private actors. She explains how these policies and private resources combine to undermine commitments to equity, participatory decision-making, equal access to opportunities, and the public good that are foundational to democracy and public education. She calls on faculties of education to teach about the harms of privatization in their programs, to reject privatizing their own practices, and to play a leading role in championing public education.

Dr. Sue Winton is the York Research Chair in Policy Analysis for Democracy and Professor in the Faculty of Education at York University in Toronto, Canada. She is the author of Unequal Benefits: Privatization and Public Education in Canada (University of Toronto Press). Dr. Winton directs the Public Education Exchange, a SSHRC-funded project designed to create and share knowledge about the privatization of public education (www.pexnetwork.ca).
