From Engagement to Relationship: Working with Indigenous Communities

May 28, 2026

Join ACDE for a panel presentation at CSSE 2026

Chair: Jan Stewart (Manitoba)
Panel: Tyson MacGillvray (Superintendent,  Frontier School Division), Nora Murdock (Education Director, Fisher River Cree Nation), Marti Ford (University of Manitoba), Helen Settee (Former Director of Indigenous Education for the Province of Manitoba)

This session brings together Indigenous education partners from community, local school divisions, and post-secondary institutions to engage in a conversation centred on what it means to “work in good ways” within the Canadian context of teacher education and educational leadership. Panelists will share experiences and approaches that honour Indigenous knowledges, languages, and pedagogies while navigating the unique responsibilities and opportunities within Faculties of Education across the country.

With relational accountability at the forefront, the discussion will highlight how respectful, reciprocal, and community driven partnerships can reshape teacher preparation, field experiences, and collaborative research. Panelists will offer insights into successful initiatives, systemic challenges, and the ongoing learning required to ensure programs meaningfully support Indigenous student success and uphold community priorities.

Designed for Deans and senior academic leaders, this session invites participants to consider how Faculties of Education can strengthen nation to nation relationships, embed Indigenous leadership in decision making, and create structures that sustain long term, trust based partnerships. Together, we explore how post secondary institutions and education systems can move beyond consultation toward shared leadership—working in good ways for future generations of teachers, scholars, and learners.
