ICPSR Summer Program Workshops in Montreal!
Offered by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research is internationally recognized as a preeminent learning environment for researchers in the social, behavioral, and medical sciences because of its range and quality of methodological instruction, its focus on intensive study, and the opportunity to establish valuable connections through the Program.
In 2015, the ICPSR Summer Program is pleased to offer three workshops at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Introduction to Regression Analysis
Dates & Time: May 11-15, 2015, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Instructor: William Jacoby, Michigan State University
Description: This workshop provides an introduction to the theory, methods, and practice of regression analysis. The workshop will begin with a review of basic statistical concepts and then go on to cover correlation, the development of the regression model, parameter estimation, statistical inference, and potential problems that can arise with regression analysis, applications, and interpretation
Fee: ICPSR members, $1500; Non-members, $3000
R: Learning by Example
Dates & Time: May 20-22, 2015, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Instructor: Kelly Gleason, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee
Description: This course will introduce participants to the R statistical computing environment, which is arguably the most powerful single tool for data analysis and graphics in use today. R is an open-source implementation of the S language with over 4,000 user-developed packages that extend R’s functionality in nearly every direction. Participants in this workshop will work through a number of example analyses commonly encountered in the social sciences. The workshop will cover linear models, generalized linear models, discrete choice models, and models for multivariate data, and participants should leave with a good understanding of R and how to put it to use in their own research.
Fee: ICPSR members, $1300; Non-members, $2600
Conducting Multivariate Analyses of Social, Economic, and Political Data
Dates & Time: May 25-29, 2015, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Instructors: Harold D. Clarke, University of Texas at Dallas; Guy D. Whitten, Texas A&M University
Description: This workshop explores several valuable tools for academic researchers in the social sciences and analysts in the public and private sectors. The workshop begins with discrete choice models for analyzing factors affecting choices individuals make in social, economic, and political settings. The workshop then considers time series methods for analyzing the effects of policy interventions and socio-economic factors on economic, political, and social outcomes. This workshop emphasizes practical approaches to analyzing individual- and aggregate-level data, and participants will learn how to use major software packages such as NLOGIT, Stata, R, Rats, and EVIEWS in their research. Participants are invited to bring their own data sets to lab sessions.
Fee: ICPSR members, $1500; Non-members, $3000

About ICPSR Summer Program Workshops
ICPSR Summer Program workshops feature morning discussions followed by afternoon lab sessions in which participants perform hands-on analysis of research datasets. All participants receive individual guidance from our instructors, who are adept at making course material accessible, and often enjoyable, to learn. Our participants include students, faculty, and researchers in a variety of disciplines from more than 350 colleges, universities, and institutions around the world.
All three of the workshops described above will take place at Concordia University in the Department of Political Science, which is located on the 12th floor of the Hall Building at 1455 de Maisonneuve West in Montreal, Quebec.
