CSSE expresses concern over U.S. Executive Order on immigration and refugees

The Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), on behalf of its members and in solidarity with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Universities Canada, and the American Educational Research Association, expresses its dismay at United States President Trump’s executive order to bar people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States and his suspension of refugee admissions to that country.

CSSE is committed to educational research that respects the diversity of cultures, ethnicities, linguistic groups, religious beliefs, socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities that make up our global community. CSSE reaffirms and expresses its essential commitment to the free and unhindered exchange of ideas, knowledge, viewpoints, and opinions that are the intellectual and communal bedrock not only of our academic institutions, but also of our treasured democracy. Trump’s executive order sets a dangerous precedent in limiting opportunities for our members and scholars from other nations to travel freely to the United States to attend the conferences and conduct the research that are essential to the furtherance of our academic work.

The Canadian Society for the Study of Education is the largest organization of professors, students, researchers and practitioners in education in Canada. CSSE is the major national voice for those who create educational knowledge, prepare teachers and educational leaders, and apply research in the schools, classrooms and institutions of Canada.
