CSSE Media Statement Supporting FN Caring Society

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS SUPPORT CARING SOCIETY IN ITS BATTLE WITH FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Ottawa, ON March 10, 2017

The Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) today speaks out in support of the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society of Canada in its quest to ensure equitable funding for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit youth both on and off reserve. Although it’s been more than a year since the Caring Society won an historical Canadian Human Rights Tribunal case on behalf of 163,000 Indigenous youth, the Canadian government has yet to act.

CSSE calls upon the federal government to end its discrimination against on-reserve First Nations children, who are consistently denied the supports and services that are available to non-Indigenous children. “We only have one childhood. So the time is to act now,” says CSSE President Nicholas Ng-A-Fook. “Indigenous children here in Canada are among the most vulnerable members of our society. In light of their commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, it is unconscionable that the federal government has failed to act upon the clear direction given by the Human Rights Tribunal.” Ng-A-Fook and the other members of the CSSE Board of Directors expect the Canadian government to model renewed relations of reconciliation for all Canadians by immediately implementing all actions required by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and put forth in initiatives such as, but not limited to Shannen’s Dream and Jordan’s Principle.

CSSE represents over 1000 scholars, researchers, and graduate students in education, and their associated faculties, colleges, schools, and departments of education across Canada.
