FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EDUCATION RESEARCHERS SPEAK OUT FOR RECONCILIATION
Ottawa, ON March 9, 2017
In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its 94 Calls to Action, Sections 62 to 65 of which are concerned with education and education for reconciliation. The Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), recognizing the many ways in which education was used as a tool of assimilation and oppression of Indigenous peoples, acknowledges its ethical responsibility, as a collective representing educational scholars and educational institutions, to work to remember and address the devastating legacy of residential schools and colonialism in Canada.
The Canadian Society for the Study of Education affirms its commitment to contribute to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples through its partner faculties of education, and in solidarity with its fellow association, the Canadian Association for the Study of Indigenous Education and the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (ACDE). CSSE’s commitment to reconciliation parallels the Principles on Indigenous Education put forth by Universities Canada, and ACDE’s commitment to its respective Accord on Indigenous Education.
Recognizing that reconciliation is a responsibility shared among all Canadians, Indigenous and nonIndigenous, CSSE further commits, through its constituent members, to addressing the legacy of residential schools by removing barriers to Indigenous success, supporting Indigenous cultures, preserving and revitalizing Indigenous languages, and reconciling relationships with Indigenous people and communities. CSSE will work with its constituent members to ensure that its services, communication strategies, and research initiatives address the educational mandates put forth within the 94 Calls to Action at the annual CSSE Conference, on its website, and its scholarly journal, the Canadian Journal of Education. We are committed to educational research that seeks to reimagine our past, present, and future relations as Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.
CSSE represents over 1000 scholars, researchers, and graduate students in education, and their associated faculties, colleges, schools, and departments of education across Canada.
