ERIC in 2018: Bringing Education Research to Users, Wherever They Search

In 2018 ERIC worked to continue to bring high quality education research to users. Here’s what we did this year:

Pursued good sources

ERIC identified 42 new journals and 17 new grey-literature sources (including publications from nonprofits, advocacy organizations, and government organizations). A unique feature of ERIC is the inclusion of grey literature, which are works from sources not typically indexed by commercial databases. ERIC also indexes the full text of all work funded by IES grantees. We have indexed 891 grantee articles available to date, with the full text available within a year of publication.

Worked to make almost 19,000 full text articles freely available

ERIC negotiated with publishers to make as much content freely available on the ERIC website as possible and linked to free content on publisher websites for 185 journals and 126 non-journal sources. In 2018, ERIC added 4,717 new full-text journal articles, 8,441 new full-text grey-literature documents, and the full text of 5,462 previously embargoed articles.

Created almost 50,000 records with citations and metadata

ERIC created records that provide information about each article, so users know if resources are a good fit. In 2018, ERIC created: 48,186 records, including 37,314 peer-reviewed materials, and 13,195 articles with full text.

Powered search engines with ERIC metadata

ERIC shared ERIC metadata to enable search engines, academic databases, and other providers to power their searches with ERIC data. This helps users find good research, wherever they are searching.

Integrated with other IES resources

Linked applicable records with other IES resources, including What Works Clearinghouse study pages, abstracts from grants funded by IES Research Centers, and Ask-a-REL responses. These interrelationships provide additional information and assist users in finding valuable IES resources.

ERIC is a free, online database of education research that serves more than 12 million researchers, educators, students, and others from 238 countries. Since 1966 ERIC has added more than 1.7 million records of journal articles, reports, and other materials. About 1 million records are for peer-reviewed work and 400,000 records have free full text available from ERIC.
