Indigeneity, Reconciliation, and Education: The Next Conversation
CSSE is excited to announce that our 2019 Plenary Speaker will be the noted Indigenous scholar, author, and pioneer in the advancement of Indigenous education, Dr. Jo-ann Archibald (Q’um Q’um Xiiem). Dr. Archibald is nationally recognized for creating culturally relevant teacher education and graduate programs for Aboriginal students. At the national level, Archibald co-led the Accord on Indigenous Education in 2010, a groundbreaking collaboration to improve Indigenous education in Canada. At the international level, she helped establish a formal relationship between UBC and the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where she served as director for the International Research Institute for Maori and Indigenous Education. In 2019, Dr. Archibald was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Jo-ann Archibald Q’um Q’um Xiiem will share Indigenous stories and perspectives about the successes and challenges of bringing Indigeneity, reconciliation, and education together in Canadian education early learning, K/12, and post-secondary contexts. She will reflect on the impact of national Indigenous educational research, commissions, policies and approaches to situate the past and current conversations on and actions for Indigenous education. Embedding Indigenous knowledge systems in educational curricula and programs, ensuring Indigenous communities are educational partners, and engaging in reconciliation efforts have been part of many educational conversations over the years. Indigenous characters such as Raven, Eagle, and Thunderbird also have long-standing educational histories and experiences. They will participate in this presentation by telling their stories and posing critical questions for the future. Now is the time to enter into new research and educational conversations to move Indigenous education forward in innovative and transformative ways. So, what is the next conversation?
The Plenary is scheduled for Sunday, June 1st from 4:30 to 5:45 pm, in Scarfe Room 100. The ACDE and CSSE Awards Ceremony and Reception will follow immediately afterward, in the Ballroom in Ponderosa Commons on the UBC Campus. All CSSE members are encouraged to attend.
