WERA Secretary General Elections Results, 2021

World Education Research Association Elects New Secretary General

An exceptional scholar has been elected to serve as Secretary General of the World Education Research Association (WERA) for a four year term (1 July 2022 – 30 June 2026). This association of 26 national, regional, and international specialty research associations aims to advance education research as a scientific and scholarly field worldwide to serve the public good. The newly elected WERA-leader is Dr. Rocío García-Carrión.

Dr. Rocío García-Carrión is an Ikerbasque and Ramon y Cajal Fellow (appointed Associate Professor) at the Faculty of Psychology and Education, University of Deusto. She combines school and community-based research to investigate dialogic learning environments as pathways to inclusion for systematically excluded populations. She has been a Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Research Associate at Wolfson College Cambridge and visiting scholar at Harvard University. She has strong track-record leading national and international projects and she has worked closely with scholars around the world through several prestigious EU projects (FP6, FP7 and H2020). She is currently the Vice-President of AMIE (Multidisciplinary Association of Educational Research).

She has been serving on the WERA Council as the representative of AMIE since 2015. Since then, she has led a WERA IRN. She serves as a Co-chair for the ‘WERA Outreach Committee’ and is member of the WERA Task Force ‘Global Challenges and Education’. She has served as member of the program committee of the EERA as Link Convenor (2016-2019). She has published prolifically (including more than 40 peer-review articles in impact journals, chapters, co-authored books, and more than 80 conference papers). She is the co-editor of the International Journal of Educational Psychology and member of several editorial boards. She serves as reviewer for several journal and national research agencies. She is member of CREA, an established international and interdisciplinary network of scholars.

WERA’s new officer assumes her position on 1 June 2022 and will shadow as Incoming Secretary General from 1 March 2021-31 May 2022. The Council which governs WERA is composed of the officers who were elected by member associations and one representative from each of the 26 WERA member associations.
