Informatics Education at School in Europe
When do students start studying informatics in Europe? What does the teaching at school focus on? Are teachers required to have specific qualifications?

Educating in informatics is essential to equip children and young people with the necessary skills to take an active part in our technology-driven and increasingly digital societies in a responsible and safe manner. The COVID-19 crisis has underlined the need for policy actions in this area and has certainly been a turning point for digital education. Informatics is still a relatively new discipline in school education, and the name and focus of the related school subjects vary across European countries.

This report contributes to building a shared understanding of informatics education providing a comparative analysis of curricular approaches and learning outcomes in primary and secondary schools across Europe. It also looks into teachers’ qualifications, training opportunities and other support measures. The report draws on data from legislation and other official steering documents collected by the members of the Eurydice network (i.e. the 27 EU Member States plus Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey).
