Enrollment is open for the ninth cycle of the international mathematics and science assessment. Since 1995, TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) has been at the forefront of monitoring international trends in mathematics and science achievement across fourth and eighth-grade students. This latest cycle brings new and exciting developments based on decades of experience in international large-scale student assessment.

State-of-the-art digital assessment
TIMSS 2027 is a fully digital assessment that employs state-of-the-art methods to create engaging assessments in mathematics and science. TIMSS 2027 integrates more authentic item types beyond traditional multiple-choice questions and other traditional formats, allowing students to demonstrate deeper understanding and critical thinking.
Expanded coverage
TIMSS 2027 expands coverage in mathematics and science by improving how we measure skills at different levels of achievement, ensuring a comprehensive view of student achievement across populations and over time. The mathematics and science assessment frameworks are updated each cycle to reflect the participating countries’ current curricula, standards, and frameworks, as well as research and policy priorities.
Contexts for learning mathematics and science
TIMSS 2027 aims to capture not only academic achievement, but also valuable data that helps contextualize that achievement for educators, researchers, and policymakers. The study gathers information about the contexts for learning mathematics and science from participating students, their teachers, and their school principals, as well as data about the mathematics and science curricula in each country.
How to enroll
Enrollment is open for countries and entities interested in participating in TIMSS 2027. For more information, please visit the TIMSS 2027 page (https://www.iea.nl/studies/iea/timss/timss2027).

The TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center, located at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, serves as the international study center for TIMSS 2027, working in close cooperation with IEA, and National Study Centers of participating countries.
